Workshops

My workshops come out of more than 25 years of capoeira and everything I picked up around it along the way. A session runs 90 to 180 minutes. You can book me for groups, studios, clubs and festivals.

Movement & mobility

No capoeira experience needed for these. I teach them in studios, at community events or at festivals.

  • PracticePlayful Movement: A playful approach to rediscovering what your body can do. Inspired by more than 25 years of capoeira: flowing movement on the floor and standing up. This is where natural movement flows start and a way into soft acrobatics.
  • Practice · 120 minKnee & Ankle Mobility: A session focused on ankle and knee mobility. We work with PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) and look at what mobility and flexibility actually mean. You also get a whole catalogue of conditioning and flexibility drills. Mobility visibly improves within the session.
  • Practice · 90 minHandstand: A session on the handstand: playful approach, conditioning drills, plenty of practice. By the end, everyone has felt what balance on their hands is like at least once. The building block for hand balancing and soft acrobatics.
Capoeira formats
  • MusicBerimbau Variations: Music theory fundamentals (meter, accents, clave) as a base for creating your own variations on the berimbau and other instruments.
  • Theory · MusicWhy do we like music?: An anthropological look at biomusicology and rhythm: why humans enjoy music in groups and what shapes the roda.
  • Theory · PracticeNotion of Play: Why "play" is the key to learning movement and how to bring it into your own practice.
  • PracticeMacaco – Movement Study: The floreio movement macaco, built up safely through two approaches (top-down and bottom-up), with variations for all levels.
  • PracticeGinga – Movement Study: Capoeira's most fundamental movement from a new perspective.
  • PracticeCapoeira Floor Flows: Making floor movement more efficient and fluid, with attention to the physiological foundations.
  • PracticeBreath & Rhythm: Using the diaphragm actively and building a conscious breathing rhythm in the game. Ends with a cardio drill that is nearly impossible without the right technique.
  • PracticeBreath & Movement: Coordinating breath with cartwheels, handstands, floor acrobatics and kicks, for more control and flow.
The four pillars of my work
  • Capoeira: Technique, flowing play and complex movement patterns for beginners, advanced students and teachers.
  • Cultural anthropology: The historical and social meaning of capoeira: resistance, identity, community. Especially useful for teachers who want to bring cultural context into their classes.
  • Movement studies: Grounded movement analysis: understanding and training mobility, balance and strength.
  • Music: Berimbau techniques, rhythm variations and the use of music in the capoeira game.
