FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
-
Mostly yes, typically classes are held in English due to Frankfurt's international culture and the german language being even harder to master than hand balancing. However, we also do classes in German and Portuguese. The language of instruction depends on the participants, and any language barriers are quickly broken through movement and music.
-
Classes are made for beginners and advanced students alike. The content of each class builds upon previous sessions, but we always adjust the level and complexity based on the participants within the session. You can start at any point in time. Participants should be 18 years minimum and ready to move. No need to have any foundation in acrobatics or capoeira. Our group is diverse and welcoming to all skill levels.
-
No previous training is necessary. You can join anytime, even if you have no capoeira or movement experience so far. You will be guided through the first steps to build a foundation that will quickly get you into learning the essential movement patterns of capoeira.

I have trained with various groups and I'm still actively traveling to train with masters and instructors from various styles. I am an active member of Xara Capoeira which was founded in 2023 in Hamburg, Germany, by Contramestre Soldado and a group of highly ambitious capoeira teachers.
-
No, there are no strict requirements for what to wear.
We recommend long (rather loose) pants and T-shirts. If you prefer not to train barefoot, we recommend clean training shoes with light-colored soles to avoid marking the wooden floor. There are no additional dress codes or uniforms for training. Just keep in mind that some movements are done upside down, so very loose clothing might get in your way.
-
Due to increased rent and limited space, we cannot offer free trials anymore, unfortunately, but I am always up for a phone call to check if capoeira and my teaching style are the right fit for you. We do offer single pass tickets for 15€ with no sign-up or long-term commitment required.
-
You can bring comfortable sport shoes (preferably with a bright sole to avoid dark marks on the floor) unless you want to train barefoot. You do not need to bring a mat or any other equipment. A loose or flexible shirt and comfortable pants are necessary for stretching. Long pants are recommended, but not required. We move around on the floor a lot, so we don't need mats or much equipment. Sometimes we use props like tennis balls to learn certain movement patterns, and I'll let you know in advance if you need to bring anything or if I will provide it.
-
No, we currently focus on teaching adults. Although we have experience teaching children and teenagers, our practice now centers on building a community of passionate adult capoeira movers.
-
At the beginning of each class, we ask about any injuries or other limitations. In a quick assessment, newcomers are briefed so that the instructor understands your comfort level with different types and levels of movement. We will gradually work towards broadening your movement spectrum. Along the way, you'll learn healthy movement methods and discover new muscles in your body, which we will strengthen together to avoid long-term injuries. Complex movements will be split into various difficulty levels so everyone can train and work on their practice.
-
No, you don't have to train barefoot. You should wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. However, a significant aspect of the practice involves connecting to the floor with your hands and body. Modern sport shoes often weaken the muscles around your feet and legs by providing too much support. To truly connect to the floor and strengthen your feet, legs, and knees in the long-term, I recommend training without shoes. Be aware that the first few weeks of capoeira practice might lead to blisters on your feet.

About the Instructor
My name is Sami Hamed. In the capoeira community, I am known as Professor Popô. Capoeira has been a vital part of my life since childhood, starting my journey in 1999 at the age of eight when I began training traditional capoeira angola. This early exposure laid a solid foundation, fostering a deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and intricate movements of capoeira.
As I grew older, my passion expanded to include contemporary capoeira, allowing me to blend traditional techniques with modern influences.
I joined the group Xará Capoeira in Hamburg at the age of 15 years. My path as a teacher started in 2008 in Hamburg, Germany. The dual approach of combining traditional capoeira angola and contemporary capoeira enriched my practice and gave me a broader perspective on the art form.
