Lorenzo Dow Turner and Mestre Bimba (1940)
On 21 December 1940 the US linguist Lorenzo Dow Turner recorded Mestre Bimba and his group in Salvador, probably in the studio of Rádio Sociedade. These are the oldest known recordings of Bimba: four disc sides of about six minutes each, each one announced by a radio speaker. You hear two berimbaus, apparently one pandeiro and a choir of men and women. Bimba sings quadras, the choir answers in the chula, then come corridos.
I transcribed and translated the whole recording as it is on YouTube (25:30). Where I was not sure of a word, I checked it against Leonardo Abreu Reis (2009), who analyses the recording in his study of capoeira songs, and against the songs collected by Waldeloir Rego (1968). What is still open is marked [?].
